POLICE have launched a probe after a secret spy camera was found concealed in the changing room of a popular gym.
The camera was set up directly facing a toilet and would have filmed gym users changing.

One member of Fitness First in Festival Way, Basildon, said they were outraged that, after overhearing staff talking about the sinister discovery, members of the gym have yet to be officially told.

The fitness centre has now reported the incident to police who are investigating.

The camera, which is cleverly disguised as a wall hook for towels and clothes, was found in the disabled toilet by staff.

cahoots

BASILDON town centre is in for a boost with developers looking to bring two new outlets into empty buildings.

The Echo understands that former Cahoots bar which now stands empty in the Westgate shopping park, is set to become a fitness centre after being boarded up for about two years.

Basildon Council has been in talks with Anytime Fitness – which operates 24 hour gyms – for the firm to take over the empty building and a planning application to change the use of the site has recently been passed.

As well as this, a proposal to turn the former Co-op Travel shop in East Walk into a restaurant has also been submitted to the authority.

Councillors have regularly criticised the town centre’s lack of eateries, with the Tory administration’s £1billion masterplan designed to create a night-time economy for Basildon town centre by opening restaurants, bars, and a cinema over the next few years.
