Olympic torch coming to Basildon

THE Olympic Torch will tour Essex during the build-up to London 2012.
The flame will start its journey through the county by taking in Colchester, Heybridge and Maldon on July 6 next year.On the same day it will also pass through Rayleigh, Southend, Hadleigh, Basildon and Grays.

Japanese 2012 swim team to train in Basildon

Basildon will welcome Japanese sports stars as the country’s swimming team splashes down in the town before next year’s Olympics.
The squad will use the £38million Sporting Village, in Gloucester Park, to prepare for the Games – while their gymnastics team could tumble into town, too!
The Japanese decided to pick Basildon after being impressed by the quality of the village’s international- sized pool when they visited. Talks are under way on the possibility of the gymnasts also training at the complex.
It will see Japanese swimmers using the 50m pool during periods between July 20 and 31.
